About Provane
Provane Windvane Self-Steering System
Provane is a robust, independent windvane self-steering system designed for sailing yachts with wheel steering, but it is equally well suited for tiller-steered boats.
Unlike servo-pendulum systems, Provane uses its own auxiliary rudder to steer the boat. No steering lines connected to the yacht’s wheel or tiller are required.
Provane can also serve as an emergency rudder and can be installed off-center if necessary.
Additional safety at sea: In case of failure of the yacht’s main steering system, Provane’s independent rudder can be used for emergency steering with the supplied tiller, providing an extra level of safety on long passages.
Technical Specifications:
Rudder blade: 300 × 1100 mm
Windvane: 520 × 1000 mm
Rudder shaft: 32 mm diameter, solid AISI 329 duplex stainless steel.
Steering system: Independent auxiliary rudder
Emergency steering: Manual emergency tiller included.
Rudder shaft bearings: Two Vesconite bushings.

Story
The Story Behind Provane
The idea for Provane was born while I was sailing around the world on a 31-foot yacht, crossing three oceans.
On the leg from South Africa to Cabo Verde, with less than 4,000 nautical miles left to sail before reaching home, a large breaking wave struck the yacht from the side and broke my old, unbranded windvane self-steering gear.
This experience inspired me to develop a stronger and more reliable self-steering system. My goal was to create an affordable windvane without compromising on strength or quality.
Since then, Provane systems have successfully crossed the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.
